Perspectives on the labour market

Midwives can work as salaried or self-employed healthcare providers. As salaried midwives they mainly work in obstetric departments at hospitals (especially in the labour ward and the postnatal ward, as well as counselling and caring for pregnant women and running parenting courses). Self-employed midwives work independently or in teams, e.g. at an independent midwifery practice, a birth centre or at the women’s home and bill health insurance providers directly for their services.

Midwifery students gain knowledge and skills necessary for managing all those situations professionally. The curriculum includes traditional knowledge gained from experience in practical obstetrics as well as latest scientific findings.
