AKAFÖ – Das akademische Förderungswerk

The AKAFÖ, a student support service also called Studentenwerk, is a service offered for the six higher education institutions in Bochum and provides support related to, for instance, residency, food, finances and cultural events. More than 300 members of staff assist you in solving problems and finding answers to questions arising in the context of studying in Bochum.

AKAFÖ Services

• provision of meals for more than 50,000 students and members of the university staff at 29 university canteens and cafeterias, one of them located directly at the hsg
• renting of 4,200 accommodations in 19 residential complexes for students
• assistance in applying for BAföG (financial support for students) at the AKAFÖ
• childcare services, services for students from abroad, general social counselling services, special needs’ services
• cultural events and more

•    Financing Your Studies
The AKAFÖ provides assistance with applications for BAföG (financial support) as well as information about DAKA (interest-free loans for students) and student loans offered by the KfW-Förderbank (promotional bank). More information and application forms can be obtained at:

•    Services for Students from Abroad
The AKAFÖ provides targeted support for international students, assistance with visits to the public authorities, tips for finding a job and accommodations, student tutorials and much more: www.akafoe.de/internationales

•    Cultural Programmes and International Affairs
At the AKAFÖ cultural service, the Bochumer Studentische Kulturoperative (boSKop) you will find a comprehensive cultural programme including workshops. More information is available at:

•    Daycare Centres for Children
